As Drag’n prepares for the upcoming USA Ultimate Triple Crown Tour and a National Title defense, we are excited about the new additions to the squad. Welcome to Sarah, Mike, Emily, and Jacob! Below is a quick highlight of each, but check out more on our roster page!
Sarah, never having heard of ultimate except for gym classes and a few pick-up games, played basketball and track at Coe College (earning All-Conference and All-American respectively). After dominating the Twin Cities Summer League circuit in 2012, Sarah elected to use her college eligibility while in grad school at the University of Minnesota, and played with the Ninjas. Her first year on the Ninjas ended well with a Nationals appearance and a top 10 finish. The summer of 2013 she played for the Twin Cities women’s team, Pop. After learning many things on Pop and becoming a more well rounded player, she returned to the Ninjas for her second year, as a captain. In the spring of 2014 the Ninjas placed 4th at regionals and Sarah was 1st team All-Region. Now, mystified as to how she got so involved in ultimate, Sarah is beginning her venture into mixed ultimate!
Off the field, in her free time, Sarah attends the University of Minnesota as a graduate student in the chemistry department. She 3D prints lots of cool things, and works to improve microscale separations and mass spectrometric couplings to microfluidic devices.
Mike grew up in California playing soccer and running track and cross country. He went to Carleton College with the aim of becoming a part of the soccer team. Having quickly become fed up with soccer at Carleton, Mike decided to make the transition to Ultimate. He hasn’t looked back since.
Outside of Ultimate, Mike conducts research examining the intersection between diets, health, and the environment. During his free time he enjoys backpacking, running, and baking bread (but really all things remotely related to food).
Emily “Regan” began playing Ultimate at South High School because all of the other Nordic skiers were doing it. She played for the University of Minnesota Ninjas from 2010-2013 and captained for two years, one of which resulted in a Nationals appearance for the Ninjas. Regan played for Pop for two years, as well as Surly women’s and Spirit Fowl for one year each.
Currently, she coaches the South women’s team and helps out with the MN middle school league. She will be a grad student in public health this fall. Regan can’t wait to tear it up with Drag’n this summer!
Jacob is one of the MANY successful ultimate players from Orono High School in Long Lake, Minnesota. After learning to play and love the sport he moved on to play for the University of Arizona’s team, Sunburn. After five years, one captain-ship, countless injuries, and a trip to Nationals in 2013, Jacob is ready to lay it all on the line for Drag’n Thrust.
Join us in welcoming the new rooks. We look forward to them picking up cones and discs after practice, carrying luggage in the airport, finding good nicknames for each, but most of all letting them loose on the field!
